Fiesso d’Artico

Its origins date back to around 1028 AD on the left bank of the Brenta Canal, halfway between Padua and Venice.

Initially, it was called only Fiesso from the Latin “Flexo” meaning curved, since the town rises on a bend formed by the Brenta river; subsequently, from a resolution passed by the Town Council of 19/7/1867 the name Arctic was added, in honor of the Magistrate of the Waters of Venice Angelo Maria Artico, who conceived a last and definitive great deviation of the Brenta river, made necessary to safeguard the country with the floods that brought great disasters to the whole population.

The territory was initially larger than the present one and was divided into two, Comune Grande di Fiesso and Comune Piccolo Fiessetto. Fiesso d´Artico was involved in many wars that affected the city of Padua (being very close to it) due to the struggles over the succession of various lordships.

The territory of Fiesso belonged to Padua until the 15th century AD when it was definitively passed to the Republic of Venice. Once integrated into the Serenissima Fiesso, it was embellished with magnificent Venetian villas, noble summer residences and rich Venetian merchants (many still exist today and are inhabited). The city of Venice was connected to Fiesso with the “Burchiello” a boat used as a real floating living room.
