Stra


The toponym clearly derives from the Latin stratã, “paved road”, extended along the Brenta Riviera and characterized by the presence of numerous Venetian villas (among which Villa Pisani stands out). In the Middle Ages, Stra suffered serious damage due to various barbarian invasions, then from the XVI century, the history of the town was linked to that of Padua and involved in the numerous wars with nearby Venice; In the 16th century, after the war of the League of Cambrai, Stra became in effect a Venetian territory.

On June 14, 1934 Stra was also the stage of the first meeting in history between the fascist leader Benito Mussolini and the head of the German Nazi party Adolf Hitler at Villa Pisani. Stra is also known at an economic level for the presence of numerous shoe factories and the production of “luxury” footwear by the most famous designer labels. A bike ride to Villa Pisani and shoe factories along the most evocative waterway between the Venetian villas: the Naviglio.
